Basil Spence’s Claremont Court development is an important example of Scottish post-war housing. The development is a key example of the progressive mixed development post-war housing schemes of the time.
This research, undertaken by students at the Manchester Schools of Architecture has revealed new material, histories, and analysis of the Claremont Court housing scheme. Specifically, the research investigates the extent in which societal perceptions contributed to the isolation of Claremont Court. The research will be investigating the atmosphere, media portrayal, architectural style and concept, local and expert opinion, and Scottish housing policies, that all contribute towards societal perceptions of Claremont Court. This research hopes to add towards a better understanding of post war welfare landscapes in Britain.
